If you were born in Northern Ireland before 1997 you should apply to the General Register Office in Belfast. If you can pay by a valid Maestro/Visa/Mastercard application can be made online by visiting www.nidirect.gov.uk or by telephoning 0300 200 7890 if calling from within the UK or on 028 9151 3101 if calling from outside the UK and can pay by a credit or debit card.. Applicants applying by post should contact their local Registration Office to obtain an application form or download one from the above website. Certificates for persons registered after 1 January 1997 are available from any Registration Office in Northern Ireland. Fees for certificates can be viewed on the above website. |

How are my rates fixed? |

Rates are set in two ways, regionally and locally. The regional rate is set by the Department of Finance and Personnel and is used to provide public services such as roads, water and education. It currently accounts for more than half the total rate set for domestic use and 64% for non-domestic use. The local rate is set annually by district councils and provides vital services such as refuse collection and disposal, street cleansing and recreation. |
