Strabane 2000 Achievements

Strabane 2000 – Transforming Strabane

To re-energise Strabane 2000 and to celebrate what’s been achieved in the past 10 years a new phase on the theme of “Transforming Strabane” will be taken forward.

Strabane District Council and Strabane Chamber of Commerce and Industry came together in early 1997 and with the support of the Department of the Environment Strabane 2000 was formed.  The aim of this initiative is to promote development, which will generate investment and employment for the benefit of both residents and investors in Strabane.  Lord Dubs, the then Minister for the Environment, launched the Strabane 2000 Initiative in the Autumn of 1998.

The Environmental Improvements that have and continue to lead the regeneration of Strabane town are based on the successful Laganside model of infrastructure led development. Progression of the initiatives has been ongoing:

1.      A £1.5m new state of the art Library and Community facility was completed and opened its doors to the public in September 2003.

2.      A major environmental improvement scheme was completed in Main Street in 2006.

3.      A Pedestrian Walkway (Post Office Lane) from John Wesley Street to Castle Street was constructed in 2006.

4.      A Shop Front Improvement scheme was carried out in 2004.

5.      New street furniture, lighting and signage was erected during 2005/2006.

6.      Strabane town was designated as a Town Centre Living Initiative Area in January of this year and applications are being made to the Northern Ireland Housing Executive from property owners for the Living Over the Shops (LOTS) scheme.

7.      Two new iconic pedestrian bridges have been designed and planned for the town.  The first bridge at the Melvin Park Sports Complex will be an important link for the communities from the North and South sides of the River Mourne.   The second bridge from John Wesley Street will unite the town centre with residential and recreational areas and will be an important link to the new Translink Bus Depot on the South bank area.

In recognising the importance of these achievements the Board is currently preparing a ‘Strabane 2000 – Transforming Strabane’ brochure to celebrate the accomplishments to date and to launch phase two of the Strabane 2000 Strategy Plan.   It is hoped to hold this event in the beginning of January 2008.
