Retailing in Strabane is undergoing a transformation with the expansion of ASDA –now their largest store in Northern Ireland - and the many major high street retailers that are taking a keen interest in the developments in its vicinity. Indeed, the council’s economic development section was instrumental in bringing together an innovative employment programme, developed by Cresco Trust through the KEY Equal European Programme, with ASDA’s recruitment drive in the district. This programme facilitated the unemployed to become equipped with the softer skills associated with seeking employment and we have no doubt has resulted in many people getting the chance to get back into the labour market.
The recent interest from high street retailers should not detract from the retailing strength of Strabane’s proprietor owned individual shops and a major initiative to capture the visiting shoppers to the town centre is an imperative to enable the sustainability and retention of the vibrancy of our busy town centre. This is a major challenge to all concerned with Strabane’s economic viability.
