Strabane District urged to ‘Saddle Up’ for Bike Week.

Strabane District Council and Travelwise Northern Ireland are encouraging local people to get on their bikes and take part in a range of cycling events and initiatives over “Bike Week” which takes place from the 18th to 25th of June.  The campaign aims to promote cycling to ease congestion, improve health and help the environment.

Council Chair Thomas Kerrigan said: “This is the 6th year that the Council and Travelwise Northern Ireland have worked together to promote Bike Week. During Bike Week we encourage all Council staff to cycle to work. Cycling is a healthier form of travel and it is also good for the environment. I also would encourage the people of Strabane District to get on their bikes and take part in the other cycling activities that have been organised for that week”.

Other bike week activities include:

  • A beginners Spinning Programme at Riversdale Leisure Centre starting on Tuesday the 19th  June
  • A safe cycling training session at Melvin Hall on  Wednesday the 20th
  • A beginners cycle tour from the Canal basin on Thursday the 21st.
  • A Short Circuit Cycle Race again from the Canal Basin on Friday the 22nd
  • A beginners cycle tour of part of the North West Trail takes place on Sunday the 24th.
  • Bike Week’s activities conclude on Monday the 25th of June with Bike MOT Sessions at Strabane Academy and Holy Cross College.

The Chairman added:  “Bike Week gives everyone the opportunity to dust off their bikes and get out on the road. Physical inactivity is a major concern and this initiative allows citizens to engage in exercise and get healthier”
