“Delight” that funding is secured to progress the bridge at Melvin.

Strabane District Council’s Chairman, Councillor Thomas Kerrigan today spoke of his delight at the announcement by the DRD Minister that Strabane District Council was successful in a bid to the Active Travel Demonstration Fund.

Speaking at the announcement in parliament buildings, Cllr Kerrigan said: “Strabane District Council is delighted to receive this much needed funding which will assist us in completing the pedestrian and cycle bridge at Melvin. I would like to pay tribute those who submitted the bid. Despite many obstacles, Strabane District Council has remained fully committed to this project and I am so proud that today we can announce an important step in its development.”

The Vice Chairman of Council, Councillor Dan Kelly who also was in attendance at the announcement explained: “This successful £873,000 bid will enable Strabane District Council to progress the development of the bridge project and 2.4 kms of cycle and pedestrian paths.”

Daniel McSorley, Chief Executive of Strabane District Council added: “This is very positive news for Strabane District Council. This crucial funding is an indication of the government’s confidence in the validity of the Strabane Bridges Project. Council said that we would complete this project and we are working tirelessly to secure the support of other funders to enable it to happen. With the support of the other funders this bridge will improve access to key services within Strabane and increase safety levels for pedestrians crossing the River Mourne.”

Councillor Brian McMahon, Chairman of Strabane Town Forum, speaking after the announcement said: “I also am delighted that Council was successful in this funding bid. It will create an attractive route that will encourage more walking and cycling on local journeys. The proposed bridge will open up Strabane town centre and remove the physical divide between the town centre and our residential areas, schools, sport and leisure facilities and churches.”
